A six-year-old's first maths exercises are often as much a writing task as a maths task. "How many cows are here?" They count — three. Good. Now they have to write the numeral 3. And suddenly it's no longer maths; it's fine motor skill, form memory and spatial orientation. And the 3 comes out mirror-reversed. Or the 7 comes out backwards. And they get frustrated — not at the counting, but at the hand not doing what the brain is thinking.
This is not a sign of maths difficulties. It's a sign of normal fine motor development. This article walks through which number errors are normal, which are worth supporting, and how to do it without breaking their joy. At Kluriko we think maths and writing should be trained separately at this age — the maths in the head and with toys, the writing at their own table.
Normal number errors at 5–7
Mirrored 3. Almost the most common. They write 3 backwards, so it looks like E. Entirely normal up to age seven.
Backward 7. They write 7 mirrored. Also normal.
Indistinct 4. The open 4 ("4" with an open top) or the closed ("4" with a closed top) — which is "right"? Both are right. They get confused seeing both. Show them both and accept.
6 and 9 swapped. Both are circle + line. They flip them sometimes. Common at five.
8 drawn in the wrong order. They make two circles instead of one continuous 8. Normal, but worth teaching the right path by six.
Inconsistent size. The 5 ends up as big as an A4 page. Or the 2 shrinks to a dot. Size regulation comes with time.
Three principles for support
1. Show, don't correct. Don't say "that one's backwards". Say "I'll show how I make a seven. Look — first a flat top, then a diagonal down." They copy.
2. One number at a time. Not the whole 0–9 in one session. One. Two at most. They need time with each shape.
3. Big numbers first. Write on big paper with a thick pen. Not small and precise. Size builds the hand's memory of the movement.
Per-numeral exercises
0 — the circle. Easy. Most manage at five. Tip: start "at 12 o'clock" and go counter-clockwise.
1 — straight line. Easiest of all. At 4.
2 — curve, diagonal, line. Trickiest of the "easy" ones. Practise a lot.
3 — two curves. Say "like two bumps". They draw the bumps to the left, so it looks like 3, not E.
4 — vertical + diagonal + horizontal. Open or closed. Pick a style and stick.
5 — horizontal top + vertical + curve. Many children skip the top stroke. Six before it lands.
6 — vertical + curve down. Not two-circle error.
7 — horizontal + diagonal. Easy once they know the direction.
8 — one continuous movement. Hardest. Six to seven.
9 — circle + vertical. Mirror of 6.
Common parent mistakes
- Running maths and writing together at four or five. They're two different cognitive tasks. Maths play with toys. Writing play separately, maybe one numeral at a time.
- Correcting hard on mirror errors. "That's wrong!" — they lose joy. Say instead "Look, I'll do another one — see how my seven bends to the right?"
- Comparing to a friend's child. "Lisa can write all the numbers." Doesn't matter. They'll get there.
- Giving up after a frustrating session. They can break after two minutes. Stop. Come back tomorrow with a new numeral.
A two-to-three-week plan
If you want to work systematically: two weeks per numeral. Week 1: introduce. Week 2: consolidate. Revisit earlier numerals once a day.
Week 1: 1 Week 2: 2 (revisit 1) Week 3: 3 (revisit 1, 2) ...
This isn't a requirement. It's a template if they show interest. If they don't show interest — stop. School will handle it.
When the errors are worth flagging
- At 8 they still write many numerals mirrored, even after half a year of gentle support. Then raise it with the teacher/specialist.
- At 7 they don't understand that 3 and 8 are different values (the maths concept, not the writing shape). Then it's a maths-development question, not a fine motor one.
- At any age: the hand tires unusually fast, they complain of pain, they refuse to write at all. Then a fine motor assessment by an occupational therapist.
